Scott Safadi and the rest of the Cal Bay Property Management team were recently honored for their work in creating a more sustainable San Mateo. Mayor Rick Bonilla honored Scott Safadi on October 15 for the work he has done to Enclave, a community located on Lodato Avenue in San Mateo. Upgrades including LED light bulbs, low flow shower heads and low flow sinks have been made in efforts to make Enclave one of the Earth-friendliest communities in town.

"It's important to focus on sustainability," Dustin Gleaton, Cal Bay Property Management's office manager said of the upgrades. "You always want to make upgrades that will result in lower water bills for your tenants and use up fewer resources."

Scott Safadi himself added to the sentiment: "High density housing, the type of housing that we manage, is essential to sustainable living. The ecological footprint of a 10-unit apartment building pales in comparison to that of 10 single family detached homes. It is critical that we further utilize the ecological efficiency of this type of housing by making sure the (high density) buildings themselves are operating as efficiently as they possibly can."

In addition to the low flow sinks, shower heads and toilets, all appliances at Enclave were replaced with Energy Star appliances. Hot water supply lines were also insulated for better efficiency. Scott Safadi calls it a win/win for both tenants and management alike. "Yes, there is an initial investment from the property owner, but in the end, even just one person (the landlord, with the help of us) can have a significant impact on global water usage and carbon production (due to the density of multifamily housing). The tenants get to participate in both the cause and the financial savings like their water and electric bills."
